February is Pet Responsibility Month

Pet Responsibility Month

Did you know that February is pet responsibility month? Taking care to be sure our pets are healthy and happy is what I consider being a responsible pet owner. What does being a responsible pet owner mean to you? Pet responsibility tips, courtesy of Bill-Jac and infamous dog trainer, Joel Silverman: Joel Silverman, infamous dog trainer and a Bil-Jac advocate, believes in an open-minded approach to dog training. Bond to the dog with your heart, but train with your brain. In other words, don’t get emotional about your training efforts. Make it fun for the dog. Sometimes the dog will need correction. Wordless Wednesday – A Rare Moment

Wordless Wednesday Rare Moment

I know this is supposed to be a Wordless Wednesday post (emphasis on the word wordless), but as you get to know me you'll find that is a very difficult task for me... indeed, as I always have a lot to say. Wordless Wednesday I've titled this 'Rare Moment' because for the last 3 years our male dog, Winston (the Bichon), has not been very affectionate toward his little sister Lilly. Earlier this week for the first time EVER we spotted them laying in the same bed. This is truly a very big deal... one for the record books! He has never been a snuggly pup. I am happy to report that since this picture was taken about a week ago, they have been spotted sharing a bed a few more times. Here's to … [Read more...]

National Dog Week is coming to a close this weekend. Did you do anything special for your furry friends? Our dogs love treats and of course they prefer homemade dog treats. We have several different types that we make on a regular basis for them, including: Cheddar Biscuits, Pumpkin Cookies, Sweet Potato Jerky, and Doggy Ice Cream. This is Winston enjoying some sweet potato jerky. It was very easy to make in the dehydrator and the dogs really like it. This is the only type of jerky that I will give the dogs, after recent scares over jerky treats made in China. The Saturday Pet Blogger Hop Please join us for The Saturday Pet Blogger Hop! We look forward to getting to know you … [Read more...]

Disaster Preparedness for Pets

Hurricane season is in full swing and already we've seen some heroic animal rescues unfolding on television, in the wake of Hurricane Isaac. When preparing for a natural disaster it's important to consider disaster preparedness for pets. Recently, I had a chance to speak with Dr. Dick Green who is the Director of Disaster Response for the ASPCA. One of the things we discussed is making an Evac-Pack for your pets, to include everything your pet will need in the event of an emergency. Some of the items mentioned seemed obvious to me, but others I hadn't thought about. If you are a pet owner, please take a moment to review this information and ensure your pets are safe in case of a natural … [Read more...]
